A dental implant is essentially an artificial tooth root that anchors a custom-made replacement tooth. Usually made of titanium, dental implants are incredibly durable and nearly impossible to differentiate from natural teeth. While dentures remain a valid option for some patients, they can cause irritation and frustration for others when they do not fit properly. Implant dentistry solves this problem by giving patients a long-lasting alternative that won’t get in the way of eating, laughing, or speaking naturally.
There are several different types of dental implants available to our patients. Our Oak Lawn and Chicago, Illinois dentists determine which type of implant to use based on the condition of the jawbone, gum tissue, and the specific health needs of the patient. Root-form implants are the most common type of implant, and are best for patients with a sound, healthy jawbone. If a patient’s jaw is deteriorating or is especially thin, a subperiosteal implant, blade implant, or cylinder implant might be used instead. These implants are designed to reinforce the jaw and provide additional support for replacement teeth.

Tooth replacement with dental implants usually takes place in three stages. During your first appointment, the dentist surgically inserts the titanium implant into the missing tooth root. The procedure is performed under a local anesthetic, so you will not feel any discomfort during treatment. Once the implant is securely attached, the dentist closes the gum tissue with stitches. For the next several months, the implant will gradually fuse with the surrounding bone in a process known as osseointegration.
The second stage of oral surgery takes place after the dental implant has sufficiently bonded to the jaw. During this appointment, the dentist fastens a small connector, also called a post, to the implant. Once the procedure is complete, the gum tissue around the implant and post is allowed to heal.
During the third and final stage, the dentist attaches the replacement tooth to the dental implant post. The custom-made tooth is carefully shaped and adjusted to complement your bite. Depending on the number and type of implants used, the entire process should take between five months and two years to complete.
