What is deep scaling?
Deep scaling is a thorough teeth cleaning used to treat gum disease. During the deep scaling treatment, your dentist or dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque, also called dental calculus) from the surface of the teeth. We also remove plaque and tartar from the pocket area between the teeth and gums. The pocket is the space between the tooth and the gum tissues, where bacteria can form and multiply. In many cases, deep scaling is accompanied by root planing, in which we smooth the surface of the roots of the teeth by removing any plaque and tartar.
Following a deep scaling treatment, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene to prevent the growth of additional bacteria and the progression of the disease. We may suggest a special mouth rinse for you to use to help your gums stay healthy.
Do I need deep scaling?
Dr. Hoffman, Dr. Flicker, and Dr. Sher may suggest deep scaling in Chicago, Illinois, if your smile is affected by gum disease. We generally recommend deep scaling if the pocket depth is five millimeters or more. The deep scaling treatment helps to reduce bacteria and prevent the disease from progressing further.
