Your tooth enamel is made up of densely packed, microscopic mineral crystal structures that give your teeth the kind of strength and durability that can last a lifetime. Even as strong as tooth enamel is, things like acidic foods and beverages, as well as the natural processes of the bacteria in your mouth can microscopically erode the mineral crystals.
If this process, known as demineralization, isn’t countered, it can eventually cause erosion on the enamel layer of your teeth that make up your tooth enamel. When this happens your teeth can actually develop sensitivity issues and become more prone to developing cavities.
If you aren’t getting adequate fluoride exposure in your average day, or you have issues with tooth sensitivity and tooth decay, then The Dental Implant Associates might suggest a basic fluoride treatment or using fluoride supplements.
There are a few different types of fluoride supplements such as sublingual tabs, gels, mouth rinse or a concentrated fluoride toothpaste.
Prescribed fluoride supplements that are meant to be ingested, must be taken at the appropriate times to be truly effective. If The Dental Implant Associates prescribes fluoride toothpaste or mouth rinse, you should apply them to your teeth right before going to sleep, or at a time when you can avoid eating or drinking for at least an hour. This will allow the fluoride to deeply penetrate the microscopic areas of your tooth enamel.
