Do you ever wish there was something you could do to keep your teeth healthy and strong without having to visit the dentist? In reality, its impossible to care for your teeth properly without frequent appointments. In fact, we recommend visiting the dentist every six months for a routine cleaning. Still, while visiting the dentist is a necessity, there are a few things you can do to make the experience more enjoyable—especially if you suffer from dental anxiety.

Fortunately, sedation dentistry has come a long way in recent years. There are many types of sedation, ranging from nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas, to oral pills. Stronger sedations can also be administered an IV in extreme cases. All of these methods work, but we recommend visiting our dentist for specific advice.

Nitrous oxide is one of the most common forms of sedation, arguably because it’s safe for children and adults and because its effects wear off after only a few minutes. Similarly, administering nitrous oxide is simple—just breath normally through a mask that covers your nose.

Oral sedation is another method used to treat dental anxiety. You will have taken a pill the night before your appointment and when you walk into the office you will receive another pill that will keep you completely relaxed. For this form of sedation, you will need someone to drive you have after. Similarly, IV sedation can be used to manage extreme cases, and you will also need someone to drive you home after.
